What most would consider to be the traditional form of Malayalam music was birthed from the Bhakti Cult in Kerala many, many years in the past.  Most would associate it with Sopana Music.  This style of music is from the state of Kerala where ancient culture abound.  The very heart of the state as well as its morals and values are weaved into the songs.  The state itself is renowned for its beauty and wonder. That is why the music from there is so beautiful, because the heart of the beautiful state rests in it music.  As you listen to the music it is like you are transported back to the beauty that inspired it.  And as you listen, you will hear nature calling to you to relax and listen.  It also speaks of the states festivals in which much of the music was inspired as well.

Since this music was originally taught orally, the music has a very organic and human element that survives to this very day.  No one can escape hearing the traditional roots of the music as they listen to its melody.  You can still hear the teachings of the gurus’ as they guide their apprentices in the art of the music.  It was not until recently that more modern methods of conveying the music began to emerge.  Although this has affected the music – since nothing stays the same, you can still hear the strong pull of the ancient ways within the music.  And since this is one of the more ancient forms of music, its ancient and mysterious sound still ring loud and clear.

You can hear the virtue and love that rings in the heart of the music.  The love quotes that are expressed still have a moral tone.  Indian culture values morals and traditional values. So the love quotes that are expressed have a true ring to them.  They speak of true love and a passion that lasts a lifetime.  So the quotes about love will always have a purity about them.  The love quotes for him or her will always speak of enduring love.

This is one of India’s crowning achievements when it comes to its classical music. And since Indian music is one of humanities oldest forms of music, Malayalam music is one of humanities greatest forms of music. With its unique instrumental beats, Malayalam also stands out as a fresh and unique sound in the world of music.  It should be noted that even the Vedas, an ancient form of Indian literature, also has a distinct melody.  Both share techniques to clearly convey the moods and emotions that the songs are talking about. Truly a great form of music.  And although modern techniques have been introduced to the ancient music form, the tradition of Malayalam music will remain strong and its ancient and moral influence will be felt for many more generations to come.
